Cleaning Painted Carpet

This is a new one to me but I wanted to know if anyone has ever stumbled onto a job where carpet had been painted. This was a rental property and I am assuming that the former tenants were trying to cover up something. I did not use my extractor on this room as I feared that it would damage my machine. Has anyone ever come across this before and if so what did you do?
