How much should I spend on my first advertising run

I'm about to send out some post cards marketing new customers and was not sure how much money I should spend or how many to send out. I know you need to market to the same people multiple times to even start to see any ROI but what would you guys recommend on a starting point. I was thinking of sending out 2,000 and hitting them again in 3 weeks.
